Learn more about Pool House Equine Clinic
In September of 2004, Pool House Veterinary Group acquired the farm and the surrounding 12 acres of land. After receiving planning consent from Lichfield District Council, work commenced in the October to create a modern clinic dedicated exclusively to the care of horses. The clinic now has a staff of seventeen full time equine veterinary surgeons – six of whom have post graduate qualifications in equine related disciplines including one with a European Diploma in Equine surgery and one with a European Diploma in Equine Dentistry.
On the 24th July 2018, HRH The Prince of Wales opened our new Equine Clinic. It is equipped with two operating theatres, a large preparation area including two DR digital X ray processing systems, two examination rooms, a radiography room, a specifically designed dental theatre, an ultrasound room, two intensive care stables, a seminar room, as well as many other facilities. There is stabling for up to 30 horses. Pool House is the largest equine practice in the midlands; approximately 14,500 visits are made every year. All classes of horse are cared for, including a number of local racehorse training yards. We are also proud of our partnership with Hallmarq UK to provide an MRI service called Midland’s Equine Referrals (MER). Other equipment includes two mobile X-ray machines, six 7.5 MHz linear ultrasound scanners (including three ‘Titan’ units and two micromax scanners), laser surgery, cryosurgery unit, arthroscope, shock wave machine, 3m digital gastroscope, laparoscopy and two 1.4m fibreoptic endoscopes. We have a small in house laboratory. The practice also provides Veterinary cover to Uttoxeter, Aintree and Wolverhampton racecourses. The Equine Clinic is supported by twelve office/secretarial staff and five grooms and two Registered Veterinary nurses. Other staff from our Lichfield hospital help as required.
The equine veterinary team consists of seventeen full time vets. We have a European Diplomat in Equine Surgery who is in charge of the surgical and fertility services. One of our vets is also a qualified member of BAEDT and holds the new RCVS Cert AVP in Equine Dentistry and European Diploma in Equine Dentistry. There are FIVE other RCVS certificate holders. Two of our vets are RCVS recognised advanced practitioners.
